Indian car manufacturer Tata Motors recorded a dip of nearly 11 percent in the domestic car market. The company sold only 38,392 units in 2009 May against 42,916 in May last year. However, compared to the April 2009 sales, the sales in the month of May show a growth of 6 percent.
The overall sales of Tata Motors, which also includes export sales, experienced a slope of 13% over 46,339 vehicles sold in May 2008. Cumulative sales (including exports) for the company, at 77,714 units, declined by 8% compared to 84,488 units sold last year.
In the passenger car market in India, the company recorded a total sales and distribution offtake of 16,563 units in the month of May 2009. Out of these, 15,388 units belong to Tata and 1,175 units to Fiat. In India, Fiat has ventured with Tata for its product launch and marketing. In May last year, it was at 19,685 units.
From the small car segment, the Tata Indica series has accounted for sales of 10,006 units which is a growth of 3 percent over May 2008.The Indigo sedan has accounted for sales of 2,832 units - 37.6 percent dip against May 2008. In the SUV and Utility segments too Tata Motors has experienced a decline of 49 percent as compared to the numbers for the same month last year.
Export sales haven’t seen much growth either this month as a dip of 47 percent is observed compared May 2008.
