Mitsubishi Outlander has become the first premium sports utility vehicle (SUV) in India to be certified by the Automobile Research Association of India (ARAI) surpassing the Bharat Stage Four (BS IV) emission norms with Bharat Stage Three (BS III) fuel. BS IV emission norms are stringent rules which the government of India is implementing to reduce the harmful effect of automobile emission on the environment.
According to a press release from Mitsubishi Motors, the certificate - AAEN0339 - was awarded to Mitsubishi Outlander on May 30, 2009. Mitsubishi Motors considers the award as a true testimony to the commitment it has towards the environment. The Outlander was launched in India on October 2008 and is sold at Rs 20.75 Lakh through 39 showrooms across the country.
Mitsubishi's Innovative Valve lift and timing Electronic Control (MIVEC) technology limits the vehicular emissions well within BS IV standards even with BS III fuel, making the Outlander the most environment friendly SUV.
BS IV emission norms will be effective on all new automobiles sold in India from April 2010 in eleven cities - Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Kanpur, Agra, Pune, and Surat.
