Carmakers' Hopes on Hatchbacks

The car manufacturers in India feel that the premium hatchback sector can give them a big boost in the times of the economic slowdown. And with this belief, all the major car makers are concentrating on launching new cars in the hatchback segment.

There are a number of hatchbacks that has been launched in a few months' time and it is believed that these launches have given the Indian car market a new lease of life. The automakers have launched cars that have a price tag ranging from Rs 3.5 lakh to Rs 7.5 lakh. The hatchback from Honda was expected to not bring in much boom because of its high price, but all the speculations got over when the hatch got very good booking within 20 days.

"We were planning to sell 700 units of i20. But we have been selling 4,000 units per month and already 60,000 units have been sold in the last 12 months," said H S Lheem, Managing Director, Hyundai Motor India Managing Director.

Hyundai launched the diesel and two automatic petrol versions of its hatch i20. The country's leading auto manufacturer Maruti Suzuki also launched its hatchback 'Ritz'.
