The much awaited ‘Nano’ (Tata’s One-Lakh Car) was unveiled at the 9th Auto Expo at Pragati Maidan, New Delhi. The commercial launch of the car will take place in the second half of 2008. The name ‘Nano’ was opted to reflect the size, technology, and trend that the car represents.
‘Nano’ is available in both petrol and diesel versions. This four-seater is powered by a 624cc, two cylinder, engine that delivers 33 bhp. This engine is coupled to a 4-speed manual transmission. To create more interior space, the engine and the battery are placed in the rear resulting in the reduction of boot size and space. ‘Nano’ comes with an independent front and an independent rear suspension and a centrally housed instrument panel. From the safety and environment aspects, the car has undergone a complete frontal crash test as per standard norms and also passed the Bharat 3 (Euro 4) emission test norms.
The length of the ‘Nano’, when compared with the Maruti 800, is close to 267 mm shorter. However, the ‘Nano’ is more spacious and comfortable compared to the 800. The car will be made available in three variants: one Base model and two Deluxe models with AC. The Base model will be priced at Rs. 1 Lakh (ex-showroom), excluding VAT, transportation charges, and all other additional surcharges.
