To have a strong position in the auto market globally, Mahindra&Mahindra is expected to enter new partnerships and is expected to expand its existing venture with Renault. It is also looking at exporting its passenger vehicles globally.
Mahindra is known for building tractors for global markets. It was in the mid-1990s, the company decided to design an SUV. The Scorpio has been a great success not only in India, but also in various other markets. Mahindra is currently planning to introduce its SUV to the U.S auto market by 2009.
M&M is in full swing to position itself as a strong and leading SUV and pick-up truck maker around the world. The concept of an SUV pick-up has taken off in a big way especially in countries like South Africa, Malaysia, and others. Mahindra wants to take up challenges regarding the SUV and trucks segment on its own, but it does not want to give up the sedan and small car segment completely and that’s where the partnership with Renault and other manufacturers comes in.
After Mahindra backed out of the Nissan-Renault partnership and its ideas of a joint venture with Chrysler fell through, Mahindra looked like it was going nowhere. However, the start of 2008 seems to have brought a new resolve to the Mahindra camp.
