The recently unveiled Mahindra Ingenio could be delayed by a few months, before it hits the roads in India. The reason is that Mahindra & Mahindra is re-working on its interior and safety features. Ingenio was scheduled to be unveiled at the Auto Expo in January and start mass production in February.
According to sources, Mahindra has delayed the commercial launch in view of it its international market. Ingenio is the most ambitious project after the Scorpio and the company plans to introduce it in other countries where it already has a presence. Mahindra is planning to introduce several new features in view of the global market. The feature that is being improved is the air-conditioning system with newly integrated rear-air vents. The exterior architecture and finish of the vehicle are also being enhanced.
A hybrid version with high fuel efficiency may also be included in the portfolio of this model. The company Vice President for the Automotive R&D division, Arun Jaura said “Several features are being re-worked to make the car more exciting to its customers. Currently the upgrade is in its final stages. The car will roll out of the showroom in late summer. The industry will, for the first time, witness several new features in the SUV.” Ingenio will have several variants with a diesel, petrol, and hybrid in its line-up. The company is also developing a 6-speed automatic transmission for this SUV that will be specific for the North American market.
M&M does not want to take any chances with quality and is making required changes before it is introduced to the market. The mid-sized sedan Logan, manufactured by Mahindra in collaboration with Renault, showed poor sales performance in 2007 and Mahindra may not want to see a repeat performance with any of its other launches.
