After the announcement of premium SUV Murano launch in India, Nissan Motors now plans to launch small cars for the Indian market.
The small car will be manufactured in at it upcoming Chennai plant, which will become operation by 2010. Nissan also plans to launch six new models in the Indian market over the next 2-3 years.
The company plans to have a total of eight products in the Indian car market by the year 2012. The product portfolio will range from entry level cars to high end cars. Nissan is currently marketing the completed imported SUV X-trail and sedan Teana in India.
Speaking to media persons about the small car, the Director of Nisssan Motors India, Mr. Neeraj Garg said, “Currently the car is in development stage at the headquarters in Japan. However, the car is being developed keeping Indian sensibilities in mind. The small car will be hatchback and will be price in the range of Rs 3 lakh– Rs 4 lakh.”
Mr. Garg said, “We have seen that Maruti Suzuki and Hyundai have been able to bring out products in the same price range and felt ‘why can’t we’. Achieving the right price without compromising on quality has been the key issue and the company is concentrating on those lines. The car will be launched independently by Nissan, even as it is under an agreement with Renault Motors, to develop and manufacture an ultra-low cost car. The car will be exported for its global market from India.
Nissan is currently constructing a production plant near Chennai along with Renault at an investment of Rs 4,500 crore. The plant is expected to have a capacity of 4 lakh cars per annum.
