General Motors is planning to introduce LPG and CNG variants for three of its existing models. The company is conducting trial of CNG and LPG kits on the small car Chevrolet Spark, sedan Aveo and premium compact car Chevrolet Aveo U-VA.
The vice-president of corporate affairs, General Motors, India, Mr. P Balendran said that “GM is working on alternative fuel technology for a long time and in India it is considering the LPG and CNG variants. The recent fuel hike has prompted the company to speed up the research in this field. Currently, the company is offering a CNG variant of Chevrolet Optra, which is available only in Mumbai, Baroda and Delhi, where the CNG fuel is available. The date of launch will be decided after the completion of the tests.
According to the industry experts, the small car Spark will be the first one to come up with a LPG/CNG variant, followed by the other two cars. All the three new variants are expected to be launched within December 2008. The tests on LPG version of Spark are reportedly in the final stages of development and are likely to be launched in a couple of months. Spark has sold over 25,000 units in India, since its launch in April 2007.
