Italian design house Pininfarina is recognized for designing Ferrari and is now planning to enter the Indian market. The company is looking forward to launching an electric car in India by 2014. By 2010, the company will launch the car model wholly for the European market. The design of the car is presently being carried out at its Italian facility.

According to Pininfarina SpA Chairman and Managing Director Andrea Pininfarina, "After the launch of the electric car in the European market, it will be marketed in the US. Then we will evaluate the demand for the car from other markets too, including India, and will launch accordingly. Asked when the car could reach India, he said, “As soon as we achieve our target of selling 15,000 units of the electric car, we will evaluate other prospective markets, including India.”

The car would be fully battery operated and would run 250 km on a single charge. The concept model of the electric car will be showcased at the Paris Auto Show in September this year.

Pininfarina had earlier proclaimed its plans to set up a global design center in India but has decided to go slow with this process. Tata Motors is currently engaged with the Italian company in setting up an engineering development center in Pune which would be ready by 2009.
