Maini Reva, the sole electric car in India already has a list of rivals waiting for launch. And now one more name is added to the list with the news of Mahindra & Mahindra working on to produce an electric car. The car claims to be bigger than the Reva. Currently, the Reva carries a price tag of Rs 3.5 lakh for the base model in Bangalore and Rs 2.9 lakh onwards in New Delhi.
Mahindra & Mahindra’s electric car will initially run on lead acid battery and later on nickel metal hydride. This four seater car, which is expected to be expensive, will be released by 2010.
The company plans to launch the car first in India and later in abroad. According to a company official, “The car will be initially launched in India and once it has made a good grip in its segment, it will venture into the foreign markets.”
However, it is yet to find out, how far the electric vehicles will be a success as India already facing power shortage and electric cars will not be as economical as CNG vehicles.
