Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM), the Indian subsidiary of the Toyota Motor Corporation, will import car engines for its upcoming small car.

Mr. Shekar Viswanathan, Director of TKM said, “Initially, the company would import engines from its facilities in Thailand or Japan. TKM could start manufacturing engines here only after the volumes touched around 2.5 lakh vehicles per annum. We would look at increasing local sourcing in the coming years provided it matches the quality and cost parameters.”

Presently under development, the small cars are expected to launch by 2011. The company is also working aggressively to increase its market share in India to 10 % by 2015.

Many car manufacturers are planning to introduce small fuel-efficient cars in response to increasing fuel prices and inflation that are perfect for Indian roads.
