Renault Announces Mumbai to Be Design Hub For It's Ultra Low Cost Car

By Motortrend India Staff   |   28 September,2008

Many car manufacturers are geared up to roll-out low cost cars in the country. Renault that has been popular for its Logan sedan has selected India to provide a larger role in designing and developing its ultra low-cost car.

However, this is a noticeable departure from Renault’s previous plans when such assignments were consistently spread across the company’s other centre’s worldwide. So far when ever Renault worked on developing any new product, all the design centers across the world would involve and Paris would take a final call.

This is for the first time that Renault is developing an ultra low-cost car in the country. It has been decided that Mumbai’s design centre will provide the main design framework, with other design centers’ across the world providing smaller inputs for the ULC.

There is a team of 10-12 Indian car designers working on the small car project. Till date these designers are working from a makeshift facility, the new high-security design facility in Mumbai is scheduled to be inaugurated on September 24.

The thirsts for small and cheap cars are increasing rapidly in India and the manufacturers have understood this and are working hard to offer fuel-efficient cars to India.
