Taking cues from the exponential success of its first multi-utility vehicle Ertiga, Maruti Suzuki is now planning to buttress its foothold in the competitive Indian car bazaar by focusing big-time on bigger utility vehicles and sedans.
In the pipeline are a face-lifted avatar of SX4, compact premium SUV Grand Vitara, SX4 crossover utility vehicle, compact SUV based on XA Alpha concept and three other utility vehicles that are likely to go on sale in the next two to three years.
So far, Maruti has been the country’s largest manufacturer of small cars. But now it’s planning to notch up its game further by focusing more on utility vehicle segment that accounts for 15-17 per cent of country's overall automobile market.
From what appears now, Maruti Suzuki’s “big” venture is likely to affect Mahindra & Mahindra the most. The Ertiga has been already pitted against its Xylo. Going forward, one can anticipate seeing Grand Vitara and the compact SUV outscore its XUV 5OO and Scorpio.
Buzz is that Maruti is planning to produce a crossover utility vehicle based on the SX4 platform in India, which would be certainly the first of its kind of venture.
Maruti's market share nose-dived by nearly 5-38 per cent in the last one year owing to stiffer market competition and labor strikes at its Manesar plant that has caused considerable loss of production and revenue to the company. Hopefully, it would be able to make up for all the loss by bolstering its presence in the utility vehicle segment.
