The rise in fuel price and changes in RBI interest rates seem to have affected the position of Maruti Suzuki India (MSI) in the small cars market. The company had dominated the segment by becoming a leading seller of small cars in terms of quantity. Alto and Maruti 800 were two cars from MSI that crossed the 10,00,000 mark in production quantity. But the story seems to have changed since last few years. With the increase in popularity of Hyundai Eon and with changes made to emission norms by the government, gaining back control over small car segment has turned out to be a challenge to Maruti Suzuki.
There has been buzz in the automobile sector about the release of Alto 800 from Maruti Suzuki. Expected to come out during the month of October, this car is said to possess an engine with higher mileage and lower emissions compared to its predecessor so as to be approved under Bharat stage IV norms. Not many details are available with respect to the features but the car may have a price tag around the 2 lakh Rs mark. If everything goes as per expectation, Maruti Suzuki can surely create a spark in the small car segment by the time of Diwali.
