Plagued by global economic troubles, the year 2012 was a difficult time for automobile companies in India. Overshadowed by labor issues and product recalls and struck by constant hike in fuel prices, the auto industry went through tough market conditions. The overall market situation hindered growth rate in the auto sector.
Amidst difficulties, there were few car models that favoured the brands in their growth strive. The handsome MPV, Maruti Suzuki Ertiga which was rolled out by the company in the month of April 2012 was well received. The well proportioned car positioned in the range, Rs 6 lakh to Rs 10 lakh has been selling in good numbers. The leader of car market launched Maruti Suzuki Alto 800 in the month of October. It was one of the most hyped cars and there were thousands of customers who booked this model before it was launched. The car is well accepted by Indian consumers and it currently has long waiting periods.
Hyundai had a decent run in 2012 headed by their hatchback models Hyundai Eon, Santro and i20. The auto maker launched premium SUV, Santa Fe during the year which has lukewarm response.
The French company, Renault came out with three models during the year. The Pulse hatchback, the Scala sedan and the Duster SUV were unveiled in 2012. Out of the three, Renault Duster has shined in India and is currently heading the sales for Renault. The overall sales numbers in 2012 have made India the 10th largest market for Renault globally.
The mid size sedan Skoda Rapid made good business to Czech auto major during 2012. The company came out with new variants of Rapid and offered discounts and accessories during the last few months of the year.
The luxury car brand Audi witnessed steep growth during 2012. The brand was successful in reaching yearly sales target well before the completion of the year. Audi witnessed about 63% increase in sales for the January to November period in comparison with same period of previous year. The premium sedan models like A6 and A4 headed the growth drive for Audi.
