Renault entered Indian market through a joint venture with Mahindra and Mahindra. It split out from this partnership two years ago and in 2012 the company came up with few new models which have strengthened the business for French auto giant.
The company’s December, 2012 sales were 5,924 units which is 32 times higher than what it had registered during December 2011 (185 units). Renault had only two models in its portfolio in 2011 which were the premium sedan Fluence and the grand SUV Koleos.
The car maker launched the Pulse, the Scala and the top-notch SUV Duster during 2012 which are running well in the market. Indian customers have shown great interest in Renault Duster. The model has topped the sales records of the company ever since its launch. The company sold 4,485 units of Duster during the month of December 2012, which comes up to 75% of the overall sales. It also won two awards from NDTV, namely ‘The Car of the Year’ and ‘The SUV of the Year’ in 2012. The automobile manufacturer sold 35,052 cars in 2012. The annual sales for the French auto major were just 1,401 units in 2011. Introduction of new models have improved the confidence level of the firm in Indian auto market.
The auto maker is aiming to build cheaper cars for Indian market and has approached the designer of Logan, Gerard Detourbet, to work on this project. Few cars including low-cost hatchbacks and the premium lift back the Laguna is expected from Renault in 2013.
