The sales figures for the financial year 2012-13 are out and the year-on-year comparison with previous FY shows a shift in buyer sentiment. The year witnessed drop in sales in the popular hatchback segment but SUV and MUV segment brought new hopes to car makers. The overall sales of cars went down by 7 percent during the year when compared to figures of FY 2011-12.
The entry level hatchback segment did see a downturn but not as high as the mid-range hatchback cars. In entry level segment Hyundai Eon witnessed a growth in sales when compared to previous year. Apart from Maruti Suzuki Swift and Hyundai i20, no other car witnessed a sales hike in the mid-range hatchbacks arena.
The sales results from SUV and MUV segment were quite interesting and clearly indicated a shift in buyer mentality in Indian automobile market. Market leaders like Mahindra Bolero, Toyota Innova and Fortuner managed to score high in year-on-year sales. The performance of Maruti Suzuki Ertiga and Renault Duster which were launched in 2012 showed that MUV segment was well received by Indian customers during the FY 2012-13.
