All is not going well with the so called "the People's Car", as it is finding hard to attract customers. Sales volume for the compact car stood at 948 units in April, 2013. With slowing down economy and lacklustre demand, the motor car sales percentage declined by massive 88% in comparison to last year.
Even export of the car remained zero in FY 2012. Tata Nano was started selling in Sri Lankan auto market in 2011. SIAM reported Nano sales fall by 27.75% in last fiscal at 53,484 units compared to 74,527 sales units in FY 2011-2012.
The story of declining auto sales is common and trigged by slowing down domestic as well as international economy, high interest rates and low demand. This period is one of the toughest time the Indian auto industry is going through. For the first time in a decade the sales went down 6.69 percent in FY 2012-2013.
Tata Group Chairman Ratan Tata told PTI, "the people's car" could not realise its real potential due to insufficient advertising campaign, plant transfer in the initial years and dealership network.
