Mercedes-Benz, German luxury car maker, rolled out its premium sports utility vehicle GL-Class at Sundaram Motors, the new world class facility of Mercedes-Benz at Bangalore. The SUV is equipped with a flamboyant 2987 cc V6 diesel engine and is priced at Rs. 78.88 lakh (Ex-showroom Bangalore).
The company has made Boris Becker, former tennis star, its global brand ambassador in order to promote its array of products and connect better with Indian customers.
Eberhard Kern, Mercedes Benz India Managing Director and CEO, said "We are ambitious. The Mercedes brand has a lot of potential in India and the year 2013 is the year of offensive for us. We are not in the numbers game. We are for profitable sustainability but with more products like the A-Class coming in, we should be able to strengthen our position in India.”
At present, the company plans to launch GL-Class and A-class in the domestic market. The first 100 units of the launch edition will be imported and from September 2013 they will be assembled at the Chakan plant near Pune.
Commenting on his association with Mercedes, Becker said: "I have been associated with the company for the last 17 years and I have three car dealerships in Germany. India is a large market and as a global brand ambassador of the company, I want the brand to be successful here."
Mercedes Benz India has sold 7,138 units last year and plans to increase the sale and fetch a double digit growth in 2013. At present, the company assembles the models - Class, E-Class, C-Class and the ML-Class, whereas the GL-Class, CLS-Class and SLK-Class are fully imported.
