The marque with the three-pointed star has pulled the covers off its latest road rocket, the S65 AMG. The car will have its world premiere at the Tokyo Motor Show and Los Angeles International Auto Show simultaneously. Mercedes-Benz will put the car on sale early next year and incidentally, the company launched the C-class Celebration edition in India yesterday.
This car is born when Merc’s in-house tuning divison takes an ordinary S class, a car designed to be superlatively comfortable, quiet and smooth; and turns it into something that goes like a missile.
The new S65 gets the same unadulterated deal – a 6.0 litre, twin turbocharged V12 engine that blasts 630 hp of power and 1000 Nm of torque at its wheels. Helping to harness all this power is the AMG Speedshift Plus 7G-tronic 7 speed automatic transmission.
The car can go from a standstill to 100 kph in just 4.3 seconds and the top speed is electronically limited to 250 kph. It can batter several sports cars if the driver chooses to floor the accelerator but surprisingly, at slower speeds, it still retains most of the comfort that one comes to expect from an S class.
This is mostly down to AMG sports suspension setup that comes with something called Road Surface Scan. This feature continuously tracks the road ahead of the car for any bumps or irregularities and feeds the data to an electronic circuit. This in turn enables the suspension to adjust and ready itself to dampen the shock even before the car actually drives over it.
At its roots, the new Merc S65 AMG is an S class and as per tradition, it comes with a fantastic excess of features such as Attention Assist, Burmester 10-speaker audio system, COMAND online system, TFT LCD instrument binnacle display, ambient lighting, panoramic sunroof, massaging seats, phone connectivity, 360° cameras, carbon fibre package, rear infotainment systems, folding tray tables for the back seats and many more.
Safety also gets bumped to ever higher standards in the S65 AMG with night view assist plus and Pre-Safe package. Combined fuel economy is 8.4 kpl, higher than its predecessor and this car meets the Euro 6 emission norms which, interestingly, will be enforced only in 2015. The S class has always shown us what new technology to expect in the automotive world and this new saloon is no different. The S65 AMG, as it has always been, is still a brilliant combination of supercar performance and superlative comfort.
