The house of the three-pointed star has premiered the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT Final Edition in unison at both the Los Angeles International Auto Show and the Tokyo Motor Show. True to its name and sadly for the world of automotive enthusiasts, this version of the car heralds the curtain being dropped on the brilliant SLS supercar.
This Final Edition version will be on a limited run and only 350 units will be produced. Interested people can order their vehicles either as a coupe or as a roadster. This car is important in another way because it is the very first vehicle to be built entirely by Mercedes-Benz AMG.
This supercar will be powered by an AMG-built 6.3 litre V8 engine that delivers 591 hp. The car itself has a front mid-engined layout for better weight distribution and thereby, better performance as well. The car can accelerate from a standstill to 100 kph in 3.7 seconds and hit an electronically limited top speed of 320 kph.
To differentiate it from the standard SLS, the Final Edition gets a carbon fibre effect bonnet, carbon fibre front splitter, carbon fibre rear spoiler and bespoke AMG alloy wheels and Cup tyres. A lot of these features are present not just to look good, but also to make the car as aerodynamic as possible. This increases the car’s performance and simultaneously, helps increase balance and safety.
The interior is a fabulous combination of alcantara, leather and carbon fibre. An AMG Final Edition badge showing the serial number of the car is set into the centre console just behind the gear selector. The car also gets sports seats with the AMG badge embossed into the head restraints.
In every way, the Final Edition is a grand vehicle epitomising a lot of supercar qualities. But then again, it had to be, because this car is the swansong for one of the all-time greats – the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG.
