Yup this is the new Honda City and yes it has grown-up but whatever you think, the new City looks bigger, is better and now more lethal for its competition. After the reveal we had a proper look around and you can see the video on our youtube channel soon but for now let us give you our first impressions of this new sedan from Honda.
New 2014 Honda City Design
Ah yes this is where the new City decoding must start and this is where a lot of the discussion regarding the new City will be centered on. I had a proper look once the initial rush of journos subsided and yes it is good looking. Of course the operative word is 'evolution' rather than 'revolution' here.
From a far away the traces of the earlier City can be seen and many details are visible but a close look reveals its seems to look bigger and more elegant/ mature than the current model. It has the 'H' design philosophy and the front has the typical Honda face with sharp headlamps and an oversized grille with loads of chrome. The front also takes inspiration from the Honda Crider saloon especially the grille. From the rear it looks more elegant and grown up.
The new Honda City measures 4440 mm in length which is same as the earlier City and so is the 1695 mm width which is the same as before. However its height now is at 1495 mm which is 10 mm more.
New 2014 Honda City Interiors
Step inside and it seems a bigger change than the exteriors. The design is funkier and more sporty plus it gets a lot of features- a weakness of the current model. The new City gets an 5" LCD screen, touchscreen AC controls, steering-mounted audio controls, rear camera, bluetooth and iPod connectivity, handsfree phone facility, rear AC vents, 8 speakers, sunroof, cruise control, start/stop button, sunroof and four 12V power outlets. That is a lot and it seems the Hyundai Verna/Elantra have some tough competition now.
The steering wheel feels nice to hold and quality is good but at the rear things are even better as thanks to an extended wheelbase of 2600 mm (50 mm more) its very spacious and great for those who will be chauffeur driven.
New 2014 Honda City Engines
There is going to be a petrol and diesel engine. Now that last bit must have been a relief to many and the new Honda City has the 1.5l 4 cylinder i-DTEC diesel engine making 98 bhp. There is the familliar 1.5 petrol unit as well which has 118 bhp. The diesel is our choice for sure and the diesel gets a six-speed manual gearbox which means an extra gear over the Amaze. The petrol has a 5-speed manual and a CVT automatic gearbox.
New 2014 Honda City Fuel Economy
This is important and though Honda have hit the bull's eye here as the City diesel delivers an astonishing 26 kmpl which is fantastic and more than the Amaze diesel. The reason for that is because the City diesel has an extra gear. The petrol manual delivers 17.8 kmpl which is also very good and the automatic with 18 kmpl is the most efficient petrol automatic in its class. All FE figures are ARAI
The price is a mystery but a lot can be understood from today's event. We like the new City as it builds up on the weaknesses of the current model while maintaining or better still increasing the strengths. Yes the design is not a shock but overall you have to admit Honda has got a winner in its hands.
