The BMW M3 has been one of those iconic enthusiast cars which all of us petrolheads ache to own. So when BMW said the name would be changed to M4 Coupe to distinguish it from the sedan, there was a collective groan in the enthusiast community. Now that the cars have been revealed the complaining has stopped and now let us take a look at one of the most important sports cars and sports sedans in the world.
“Four generations of the BMW M3 have blended motor sport genes and uncompromised everyday
usability within an emotionally rich overall concept,” explains Dr Friedrich Nitschke, President BMW M GmbH. Indeed. The heart of the matter is the new six-cylinder in-line engine with M TwinPower Turbo technology developing 431 hp and peak torque of 550 Newton metres.
There is also a reduction in fuel consumption and emissions of around 25 per cent but the number you all want to hear is the 0 to 100 km/h time of 4.1 seconds (with the seven-speed M Double Clutch Transmission). Top speed is 250 km/h (electronically limited), or 280 km/h with the optional M Driver's Package. What is standard is a six-speed manual gearbox with a double-plate clutch.
The steering for the BMW M3 Sedan and BMW M4 Coupe offers the driver three settings as standard, which can be selected at the touch of a button. COMFORT, SPORT and SPORT+ are the modes which help the driver modify the car according to the type of road surface for example in city, track etc. The optional M DCT Drivelogic also gets launch control and standard is the Active M Differential and electromechanical M Servotronic steering.
Both of these cars are lighter by 80 kg's compared to their predecessors thanks to increased use of lightweight materials such as carbon-fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP) and aluminium for a number of chassis and body components plus there is also a carbon roof.
Both of these cars look the part too with a low wide sports car look. Both these M versions are lower and wider than the standard cars and the optional LEDs, large airintakes and black kidney grille make it look stunning. There are 18 inch and 19 inch lightweight aluminum wheels.
Inside its sporty with usual M detailing everywhere. There is no doubt that the new M3/M4 is a stunning car which we are aching to have a go at, BMW India will surely bring it next year here.
