The fourth generation of Mercedes C-class has finally made its debut at the Detroit Motor Show 2014. The C-class is the largest selling car of Mercedes Benz worldwide and the new gen will also try to maintain this reputation.
The new C-class is based on the modern MRA (Mercedes Rear-Drive Architecture) platform which suits the rear wheel drive models of Mercedes. It’s a very light platform which has also reduced the weight (100kg) of the car resulting into better power to weight ratio than before. The car has bigger dimensions than its previous generation and now its 95mm longer and 45mm wider than before with an increased wheelbase of 2840mm.
The ‘sensual purity’ theme of Mercedes is quite noticeable in this new car which makes it quite similar to the new gen S-class and updated E-class. The sharp lines, new front grille and reduced overhangs make this car look aerodynamic which will surely appeal to the young buyers. The cabin feels much more premium and spacious than before. The extended length of the car has resulted into stretched wheelbase which gives you good amount of leg room inside.
The wraparound design of dashboard resembles to the more premium S-class with three circular ac vents in the middle and the sophisticated central console with less buttons and rich finishing. Steering, lane and parking assistance systems, autonomous driving at low speed are some of the high end features which it shares with its elder sibling, the S-class.
The car comes with first in class adaptive Airmatic air suspension system with four driving modes and light weight chassis. Internationally, C-class has been launched with wide variety of engines including 2.1L (168bhp) turbo diesel engine, 2.1 L (181bhp) and a 1.6L (154bhp) petrol engines.
Few more engines will be added to the line up after its launch internationally later this year or next year. Current engines are available with six-speed manual transmission and seven speed dual -clutch automatic. For the first time in class, few models of C-class will be available with all wheel drive option but for now these all engines come with rear wheel drive. Undoubtedly, this is the best version of C-class that we have seen till now and when launched will provide stiff competition to the likes of the BMW 3 Series and Audi A4, speaking of which Mercedes is expected to launch this new C-class in India at the end of this year or starting next year.
