Whenever a Maruti Suzuki hatchback gets ready for debut in India, it often becomes a topic that creates quite a buzz and this time its no different as Maruti is all set to launch their new entry level hatchback, Celerio which will surely affect the market space of other small cars in this price bracket.
Recently the Hyundai Grand i10 has been the best selling car in its segment and with the arrival of Celerio; it will be interesting to see if Grand i10 will continue to rule its segment or Maruti’s new warrior will steal the show. Let’s get into the detailing.
Engines comparision of Hyundai Grand i10 and Maruti Celerio
Grand i10 has a big advantage as it is available with petrol as well as diesel engine but it will be its petrol version only which will take straight on Celerio as Maruti has no plans to bring the diesel avatar of Celerio. For now. Grand i10 uses the popular 1.2L Kappa2 petrol unit from Hyundai which also powers its other siblings. This motor generates a power output of 82 bhp @6000rpm with a maximum torque output of 114Nm coming @4000rpm.
Whereas Celerio will be powered by the 1.0L K series engine from Maruti which was first introduced in Wagon R. Maruti has specially made some remarkable changes in this engine to make Celerio feel more silent and peppier than Wagon R.
The technical specifications are same though. It churns out its peak power of 67bhp@6000rpm while its utmost torque output of 90Nm arrives @3500rpm. Both the cars are available with automatic transmission and that’s where the big difference lies.
Grand i10 uses a four-speed automatic transmission whereas Celerio will be powered by the five-speed gearbox similar to its manual version. The Celerio uses no torque converter which differentiates it from other automatic transmissions.
It’s not like other automatic transmissions but basically a manual gearbox but without using a clutch. It has a D, R, N and M mode but there is no parking mode. While you drive it like any other AT it is not the smoothest of gearboxes but the biggest benefit is the 23.1 kmpl efficiency which just blows away everything else in this regard.
Interior comparison of Hyundai Grand i10 and Maruti Celerio
Maruti has revealed the interior of the Celerio which is a big leap over the previous A-Star. There is a big improvement in quality and the design borrows from the bigger Maruti Dzire. The light colours make it spacious and it is more spacious this time. But is it enough to dethrone the Grand i10? Probably not as the Grand i10 just takes things to the next level with its excellent interior. The fit and finish is really good and it feels much more expensive that it really is.
Features and Price comparision of Maruti Celerio and Hyundai Grand i10
Celerio will be available in three variants namely LXI, VXI and ZXI. The base model will come equipped with power steering and air conditioner while the ZXI variant will come loaded with features like power windows, integrated audio system, Bluetooth connectivity with steering mounted control, central locking, 14-inches alloy wheels, electrically adjustable side mirrors and driver side airbag. The Automatic Celerio is only available in LXI and VXI.
The Grand i10 comes with all these features along with a rear ac vent and electrically retractable side mirrors which again provides it an advantage here. What’s common between Celerio and Grand i10 is that both the car comes with optional packages of ABS and passenger side airbag.
The Celerio is priced from Rs 3.7 lakh whereas the Grand i10 starts from Rs 4.2 lakh. The automatic Celerio is priced from Rs 4.1 lakh which is great value for money and for many that will be enough. Still you cannot discount the Grand i10 in AT form which is more expensive but with its premium interior, better ride its worth the extra cash.
