Auto Expo 2014- BMW i8 First Look Review

Finally, BMW has raised the curtains from its new flagship car in India and best of all, it was Sachin Tendulkar hikself who unveiled it, i8 at Auto Expo 2014. This hybrid sports car is the second offering from BMW i and it’s also the first Plug-in hybrid car from BMW group. BMW i8 looks futuristic with its aerodynamic styling, sharp lines and sporty presence.

It’s a four seater sports car with advanced styling features like scissor doors, full LED headlights with optional laser lights and 20inches alloy wheels. The car uses aluminum body which keeps weight in check and suits the LifeDrive architecture design developed exclusively for BMW i.


Technically, this car debuts with the revolutionary BMW Twin Power turbo and eDrive technology. This car is equipped with a 1.5L, 3-cylinder petrol engine which supplies power to its rear wheels. This engine pumps out a peak power of 230bhp with a torque output of 320Nm.

This engine is mated with a six-speed automatic gearbox whereas its electric motor using lithium ion high voltage battery generates a maximum power output of 130bhp with a torque output of 250Nm. This hybrid unit powers the front wheels of i8 using a two-stage automatic transmission.


The combo power package of i8 results into amazing powerful performance. The car weighs only 1490kgs and produces a cumulative power and torque output of 362bhp and 570Nm which gives it the best in class power and torque to weight ratio.

This can be seen in its performance as well as the car sprints from 0-100km/hr in 4.4seconds making it one of the fastest sports car available in India. One can choose from the five different driving modes available in i8. The lightweight chassis along with damper controls and double wishbone suspension system gives you great amount of confidence while driving at high speeds.


BMW has loaded i8 with premium features like Navigation system, digital instrument panel, leather sports seats, Park distance control, cruise control with braking function, collision warning, rear view camera, speed limit info, emergency call function, head up display, intermodal route guidance and BMW online entertainment along with all the essential features which you could possibly think of in a sports car.

Moreover, the I Wall box can be used for convenient battery charging at home. BMW offers four variants i8 in four different colors depending upon their equipments. The BMW i8 will be launched as a CBU towards the end of this year.
