The compact sedan segment is expanding, need proof? Take a look at these three new entrants. All three are there at the Auto Expo 2014 and all were revealed before the Expo started. The compact sedan segment started with a bang with the likes of the Maruti Dzire and then further expanded with the Honda Amaze. Now with these fresh entrants, the war will hot up even more. For Tata the Zest compact sedan is very important especially as it represents the start of a new chapter.
New engine, new gearbox, new interior and a new design language mean that this is an impressive car. We have had a look at it and are impressed with it. The Tata Zest's talking point is the new 85 bhp 1.2 turbo petrol and the AMT gearbox being put in the diesel. The Hyundai Xcent on the other hand is a Grand i10 with a boot but is a strong contender as the Grand i10 is a very good product with an excellent interior.
The added boot will only increased its appeal plus the frugal diesel engine is also a string point. The car has two engines from the Grand i10 and the petrol has the automatic option. One of its big advantages is the long equipment list that Hyundai has provides which will make it tough for others.
The Ford Figo Concept design wise gets full marks for its fantastic styling and when Ford launches it next year, this would be a serious player in this segment space. The Figo concept will have the engines of the Ford EcoSport and will replace the Classic. Ford has not even revealed the interior of the Figo concept so its launch is still some time away but there is no doubt that the compact sedan war is just starting.
