BMW will add another SUV to its line-up and it will be its biggest and most luxurious ever. The X7 will be a notch above the X5 and will compete with the Mercedes GL and to some extent the Range Rover. The X7 will be produced at the US plant and will join the X1, X3 and X5 with the X4 and the X6 occupying a niche SUV segment.
The BMW Group is expanding capacity at its U.S. plant in Spartanburg where the X7 will be built in South Carolina. “To meet strong global demand for our BMW X models, we will invest a total of one billion U.S. dollars in our Spartanburg plant by 2016. This will increase annual production capacity by 50% up to 450,000 vehicles from 300,000 currently,” explained Chairman of the Board of Management of BMW AG, Norbert Reithofer, at a special ceremony in Spartanburg on Friday commemorating 20 years of production in the U.S.
