There was a time when Swift Dzire was enjoying long waiting lists at all Maruti dealerships across the nation. This car was the only competition for itself in our market and there was no sub four meter sedan to challenge Dezire. Honda then took the challenge to take on this popular compact sedan and came out with Amaze, which really did ‘amaze’ all the sub four meter car buyers and the car now enjoys a big share in the market.
Looking at the popularity of these two cars, nation’s second largest car manufacturer, Hyundai has also launched their much ambitious project, Xcent in this segment which looks like the next big thing in this segment however it will be too early to comment on its fate though. Apart from these sub four meter sedans, Zest from Tata motors is also soon expected to join these cars. With Tata Zest, it will become India’s first car maker to have two sub four meter sedans in its portfolio in India.

After its launch in our market, Zest will become the first car in its segment to offer features like projector headlamps, day time running LED lights and 16-inches alloy wheels. The car will also have essential and premium features like climate control, parking sensors, power mirrors, windows, height adjustable driver seat, touch screen infotainment system with navigation and Bluetooth connectivity.
Zest will also become India’s first sub four meter sedan to feature Automated Manual Transmission as it will debut with Tata’s first F-tronic five speed gearbox which will give it an upper hand over all its competitors.
Zest is not the only one which will have first in class features as Hyundai has already played smartly with their newly launched Xcent. The Hyundai Xcent comes with many first in class modern features like keyless entry, push button start, rear view camera, rear a.c vent and music system with 1GB storage space and Bluetooth connectivity. Hyundai also offers Xcent with comfort features like automatic climate control, power folding mirrors and CD, USB and Aux compatible music system.
Zest and Xcent surely offer good amount of premium features but when it comes to basic features then its Amaze which wins over Dzire. The base model of Honda Amaze comes equipped with all power windows, a.c, power steering, central locking and music system.
Dzire on the other hand has 15inches alloy wheels and automatic climate control which gives it an advantage over Amaze which features relatively smaller 14 inches alloy wheels and lacks automatic climate control. However both cars misses out on Bluetooth connectivity and comes with an integrated audio system with steering mounted controls.
From safety perspective as well, it’s Amaze which tops the segment as it comes with ABS as a standard feature in its diesel version and features dual front airbags similar to Dzire in its top model. This safety features are also likely to be seen in Zest as well and are optional feature in Xcent.
If we talk about the current cars in the slot then it’s the newly launched, Hyundai Xcent which is the most affordable car in this segment. The base model of petrol and diesel version of Xcent are priced at INR 4.66lakhs and INR 5.56lakhs whereas it top (Optional) variants cost around INR 6.47lakhs and INR 7.38lakhs respectively. That is fantastic value for sure.
Honda’s Amaze ends up being the most expensive car in the slot with pricing starting at INR 5.04lakhs and demanding INR 7.54lakhs for its top end variant whereas Dzire comes with a price tag of INR 4.85lakhs for its base model and INR 7.32lakhs for its top model. The Zest will be priced competitively at a starting price of around Rs 4.7-4.8 lakh.
All these cars are priced quite competitively and they are stuffed with power and features accordingly, its seems to be a close battle in the coming time and it will be quite interesting to see how Tata positions their Zest amongst these segment leaders which demand complete justification from every car to succeed in their segment.
