American car maker Ford has introduced the all new Escort at the Auto China 2014 motor show. The Escort was a sedan that Indians were very familiar with back in the 1990s and it was very well received here in the subcontinent. The Chinese debut of the all new Ford Mustang also took place at the event.
The new Escort carries Ford’s new front grille that is reminiscent of Aston Martins and it looks fairly similar to the concept vehicle presented during the Shanghai Motor Show held in 2013. The car is meant to provide a means of transportation for the masses and therefore, it does not look earth-shattering in any way.
Even on the inside, the design is quite plain but is purely functional. But there are innovative touches like the Device Dock, a new way to store, mount and charge devices like mobile phones, MP3 players and satellite navigation systems. The Device Dock integrates them seamlessly into the in-car entertainment system for an easier operating experience.
The vehicle will mostly be driven by a 1.5 litre, 4 cylinder engine that focuses more on fuel economy than outright performance. Marin Burela, the President of Changan Ford Automobile commented, “The Ford Escort is a perfect example of how Ford’s global approach can be fine-tuned to meet the needs of individual markets by listening to customer feedback. Taking Ford’s hugely successful C-car platform as a foundation, the all-new Ford Escort puts us in a perfect position to serve Chinese customers looking for an alternative and attainable compact car. The Ford Escort is the answer to the question of what these consumers really want and value in a car for themselves and their families.”
