Compact SUVs seem to be the latest craze in our Indian market and this segment had exploded with the success of the Ford EcoSport. This had inspired every car maker in seeking their fortunes in this segment. Recently the launch of the S-Cross and Creta has shown the growth of this kind of vehicle and the fact that it has been eating into the midsize sedan sales too.
In this article, we take a look at some of the upcoming under 4 metres compact SUVs which will spice things up in our Indian market in the years to come.
Maruti Suzuki YBA
Earlier speculated as XA Alpha now this new compact SUV is codenamed YBA. This will be the first sub four meter SUV ever from nations largest car maker which will dent the market space of Ecosport. The SUV has been caught on testing few times which show the finer details of this SUV which includes chrome grille at front, square shaped face with high ground clearance and tail gate mounted spare wheel. This SUV looks quite impressive and has a macho presence which also proved to be one of the key factors to success in case of Ecosport. The styling and interior layout of this SUV is expected to be more premium than Swift and will take styling cues from the recently launched S-Cross. As far as engine line-up in concerned we can expect the powerful 1.4L K-series petrol and 1.3L Fiat sourced Multijet engine to power this SUV. Both engines having a power output of 94bhp and 89 bhp respectively. Maruti, we are waiting...
Mahindra S101/ XUV100
This Mahindra compact SUV or we can say a hatch with extra ground clearance is also in its finally testing stages. To be called XUV100 it is likely to get its styling cues from its much higher segment sibling, XUV 500 as seen here caught testing. Our recent spy shots revealed the actual width of this compact SUV with its wide front face sporting projector lamps. The interiors of this SUV are of the best quality that we have ever seen on any Mahindra till now. It will be a 6-seater compact SUV with all premium features such as auto climate control, ABS with EBD touchscreen system and many more. Mahindra might launch the S101 with a newly-developed turbocharged 1.2 L petrol engine and the updated version of their 3-cylinder 1.5L, 100bhp diesel engine doing duty in Mahindra, Quanto. The Quanto has not been successful but this time Mahindra has armed itself with a much more desirable product.
Shown at the Auto Expo 2014, Adra SUV concept seems to be the most practical one keeping our market in mind. The tall and compact dimensions of this car look quite realistic for the production version. All around body cladding wrap around rear glass and silver finished roof rails give it an appealing and sporty appearance. The Adra is very important for GM India and priced well this would be the success that they are waiting for. However its still some time away.
Honda has revealed the brand new compact SUV, BR-V in Indonesia which will debut our market once its go on sale in Indonesia. The BR-V is based on the same platform of Brio, Amaze and Mobilio but gets a complete different front and rear end styling adding that SUV look to it. The heavy chrome styling on front grille, higher ground clearance, black cladding all around and 16-inch wheels enhance the macho appearance of this SUV. It shares its wheelbase of 2652mm with Mobilio and comes in 7-seating arrangement with complete new interiors similar to premium offering Jazz and the City in dual tone colors. In India, we can expect the 1.5L petrol and diesel engines. Both engines and gearboxes will be shared with Mobilio as the 1.5L i-Vtech petrol unit comes with a power output of 118bhp while the latest diesel unit has a power production of 100 bhp. It will be interesting to see if it comes with automatic or CVT options.
After the Hexa and Kite the big one would be this, the Nexon. Shown at the last Auto Expo it has futuristic styling and a lot of the interior styling like the floating central console is inspired from Megapixel. Tata will try to implant their modern 1.2L turbo charged Reventon petrol engine in this car along with the Fiat sourced 1.3L Multijet diesel engine.——Obviously it will be watered down as the production version but we have been assured that it will look a lot like the concept as shown above. We expect a next year launch but it could be late as its still under development.
Mahindra will first launch this compact SUV next month which has a tank shaped styling adding that visual bulk to the SUV. This will be placed between Bolero and Xylo with a competitive pricing to take on Ecosport. As its spy images revealed, the SUV will have seven seating arrangement. The SUV is based on a complete new platform which is also compatible for 4WD but for now, it will be launched with 2WD layout. The engine line up will have the updated 1.5L 3-cylinder diesel engine of Quanto and there could be the in-house developed 1.2L petrol engine as well. The high ground clearance, butch SUV styling and powerful engine will be the biggest USPs of this SUV. Wait gets over on 10th September.
