While there is no shortage of diesel sedans in the midsize segment there is no choice available if you want a midsize sedan with an automatic gearbox which has a diesel engine. The reasons have been mainly due to cost as the diesel engine coupled with the automatic gearbox pushes the price up but now there are many who want such a car. Volkswagen and Tata Motors will be launching two new diesel automatic sedans.
First let us start with the Zest and the big news is that the Tata Zest diesel will have an automatic option. The Zest diesel will get the new F-Tronic AMT gearbox which means that the Zest will be India's cheapest diesel automatic sedan. This will be a big advantage to the Zest which Tata Motors is keen to exploit. AMT gearboxes are cost efficient and also offer good economy- factors very important for buyers. The success of the Maruti Celerio has meant more cars will come with AMT gearboxes.
While Tata Motors is going the AMT route Volkswagen will giving buyers a choice of having the Vento with a DSG autobox. Yes, the only other car in its class with an automatic gearbox is the Hyundai Verna and that means here is a niche to occupy for Volkswagen. It has done well with its Vento TSI and Polo TSI having the 7-speed DSG gearbox and now with the new 1.5 diesel engine coming in, the Vento will have an automatic also. Its not clear whether it will be a 6/7 speed DSG autobox but whats sure is that VW will also offer it in the mid-spec variants also along with the top-end trim.
Looking at our changing demands manufacturers should launch other diesel cars with automatic gearboxes as here lies an untapped sales potential!
