Tata Motors’ new SUV concept, the Nexon, was shown to us at the India Auto Expo held at Greater Noida in February this year. The car had undeniable good looks and charm and now, Tata says that the vehicle will hit the production lines within 18 months.
At the Indian Auto Expo, the Nexon concept was equipped with a 1.2 litre, 3 cylinder petrol engine that was turbocharged to produce a maximum power output of 110 PS and a 5 speed automatic transmission. It even had an electronic all wheel drive system.
When launched, the Tata Nexon won’t be without some serious competition. It will have to face the Volkswagen Taigun (also seen at the Auto Expo), the two compact SUVs from Mahindra poised for launch, the Hyundai ix25 and the Ford EcoSport. Renault also has a compact SUV on the drawing board. The fact that Tata has joined the game rather late can’t be hidden but the company reports that they feel very confident about the Nexon. We’ll know for sure in the next couple of years!
