The Polo GT TSI is the car which started the trend of premium and powerful hatchbacks in India and gained popularity. This is currently the largest selling powerful hatchback in India and faces competition from Abarth Punto only however the manual gearbox and higher pricing of Abarth goes against it. To make sure the Polo GT TSI gets direct competition in terms of pricing and automatic transmission, Hyundai has launched the powerful petrol version of their best selling premium hatchback Elite i20. Which one is better and makes more sense? Let us find out in detail.
Both cars are premium hatchbacks which are bigger in size however by giving just a visual glance one can figure out that Elite i20 is the bigger one. The Elite i20 stands at 3985mm which makes it 15mm longer than the Polo. The Elite i20 is also the wider car as it measures 1734mm while the Polo has a width of 1682mm. The Polo surely lacks the wide sporty stance as seen in Elite i20 but looks quite solid with its typical German styling and bold body lines.
The additional length of Elite i20 also results in longer wheelbase of 2570mm which is significantly 114mm longer than the wheelbase of Polo. Both cars have almost similar ground clearance as they ride low and it———s the Elite i20 which has a ground clearance of 170mm which is only 2mm higher than the Polo. Since the Elite i20 1.4 is only available in Magna variant so it rides on 14-inch while the GT TSI is the top variant of Polo so it rides on bigger 15-inch wheels.
The Elite i20 comes standard with a 1.2L petrol engine and so does the Polo however their automatic variants comes powered by a more powerful 1.4L, petrol and turbocharged 1.2L petrol engines respectively. The 1.4L DOHC petrol engine of Elite i20 has an utmost power and torque output of 98bhp@6000rpm and 135Nm@4000rpm while the Polo GT TSI has an even more powerful turbocharged 1.2L TSI SOHC engine which has a power and torque output of 103bhp@5000rpm and 175Nm@1500rpm respectively. The Elite i20 offers its powerful petrol engine with a conventional 4-speed auto gearbox while the Polo GT TSI comes equipped with an advance 7-Speed DSG transmission.
The power output of both engines is almost the same however the massive torque output of Polo GT TSI is its bigger advantage. The torque comes flat out at 1500 rpm and makes the Polo faster of the two by quite a margin.
Since, the Elite i20 is only available in the Magna variant with auto gearbox so it misses out some premium features which give its rivals an advantage. All features available in the Magna variant of Elite i20 such as power windows, adjustable power steering, keyless entry, electrically adjustable ORVMs, audio system with Bluetooth connectivity and steering mounted controls and front dual airbags are available in its Polo as well. However the Polo GT TSI is only available in the top variant and it offers additional features such as leather wrapped steering wheel, automatic climate control, adjustable steering wheel, speed sensing door lock, cruise control, rear de-fogger, wiper, front fog lamps, alloy wheels, rear parking sensors, MID, dual front airbags, ABS and ESP and auto folding mirrors.
The automatic variant of Elite i20 has been priced at INR 9.02lakhs while the Polo GT TSI is priced at INR 9.05lakhs which makes them direct rivals but in terms of pricing only (All prices, ex-showroom, Delhi). The Elite i20 surely has a powerful engine and also has spacious interiors but the lack of safety and premium features puts it on the back foot if compared to Polo. The Polo GT TSI on the other hand lacks the interior space but it compensates for it almost in every other department. It is faster with an advanced engine and transmission, offers all premium features and beats its competitors completely in terms of ride and handling. So if the space is your only concern and you love the i20 styling then you can think about the Elite i20 else Polo GT TSI leaves no reason to pick any other car over it which favors every buyer of this segment who craves for powerful performance with great ride and handling.
