New Toyota Etios vs Honda Amaze vs Hyundai Xcent

  16 October,2014

While most of the auto makers are betting high on the sub four meter sedans in India due to their rising demands, Toyota has some other plans. Rather than getting a new sub four meter car in India, they have silently launched the faceliftd version of their entry level sedan, Etios promising more comfort, power and features than most of the sub four meter sedans at similar prices. Will this refreshed Toyota Etios be able to attract the prospective buyers of its main and very successful competitors, Honda Amaze and Hyundai Xcent? Let's find out as we compare their worthiness here in detail.

If petrol engine is your preference then Etios stands a bit taller than the other two thanks to its more powerful and higher in displacement 1.5L engine. This engine has a power and torque output of 89bhp and 132Nm which can be achieved at 5600rpm and 3000rpm respectively. This engine is very refined and responsive but if you wish for a petrol automatic then you have to leave out Etios as it only comes mated with a five-speed manual gearbox.

And here comes Amaze and Xcent in action as they both are available with optional automatic transmission. Both cars come with 1.2L petrol engines and the power output for Amaze and Xcent is 87bhp and 82bhp along with respective torque output of 109Nm and 114Nm. Amaze features a five-speed auto gearbox while Xcent offers a four-speed automatic transmission. Their regular variants come standard with five-speed manual gearboxes.

If we talk about diesel engines then, the Honda Amaze is the most powerful car in the lot with its 1.5L diesel engine churning out a maximum power and torque output of 99bhp and 200Nm while Xcent follows the next with its relatively smaller 1.1L, 3-cylinder diesel engine producing a maximum power and torque output of 71bhp and 180Nm. Despite being a four cylinder engine, the 1.4L, SOHC diesel engine of Etios is the least powerful engine in this comparison with a power and torque output of 67bhp and 170Nm. All three diesel engines come mated with five-speed manual gearboxes.

The base model of Amaze seems to be the most feature equipped variant in this comparison as it comes standard with all four power windows, power steering, A.C, central locking and even ABS with EBD in the diesel version. But as soon as you step up, competition increases as Toyota has recently added new features in the new Etios while Hyundai is always known for stuffing their cars with features. The top variants of all these cars come with 2-Din music system with steering mounted controls, electrically adjustable wing mirrors integrated with turn indicators, remote locking, alloy wheels, premium upholstery and dual front airbags.

The new Etios is now the only car in this comparison which comes standard with front dual airbags while Xcent is the most feature packed car here. Yes, the new Etios has Bluetooth connectivity while Amaze also has power folding mirrors but even after including all these, you get many more features in the Hyundai Xcent. For instance, push button start, automatic climate control, rear a.c vents, rear parking sensors, camera, 1GB internal memory for its music system and few more.

The base variant of the petrol and diesel version of the new Etios is priced at INR 5.74 lakhs and 6.84 lakhs while it's INR 5 lakhs, INR 5.98 lakhs and INR 4.73 lakhs, INR 5.62 lakhs for Amaze and Xcent respectively. The top variants of the diesel version of Etios, Amaze and Xcent are priced at INR 8.16 lakhs, INR 7.49 lakhs and INR 7.47 lakhs respectively. Amaze and Xcent feature auto gearboxes only in their top variants which will cost you around INR 7.55 lakhs and INR 7.29 lakhs. (All prices, ex-showroom, Delhi).

If you really crave for that big car feel then Etios with its new styling and feature update suits you the best. Yes, you are paying a bit more for that premium feel but you also get peace of mind with ownership of a Toyota car and don't forget it comes standard with dual front airbags. But if feature list is on top of your priority then nothing beats Xcent with its premium features and attractive pricing and at almost similar prices you can also have a very powerful, fuel efficient and spacious, Amaze which also comes with Honda's credibility. Decision is completely yours, go for the car which fulfills your need and most importantly fits in your budget.
