Now a days hatch buyers prefer choosing a less feature equipped variant of an entry level diesel car rather than getting in lines of CNG with their feature stuffed petrol hatch like Swift in order to keep their running costs down.
This search with a budget limit of around 5lakhs currently leads them to two cars; Chevrolet Beat and Ford Figo. The base variant of Beat diesel is priced at INR 4.78lakhs while the entry level variant of Figo diesel is merely 4K more expensive.
As speculated, these cars will soon be joined by the diesel version of Maruti Celerio. The car is likely to feature a homegrown 800cc two cylinder engine which will have a power and torque output of around 50bhp and 130Nm respectively with class leading fuel efficiency of around 30km/ltr. The pricing is likely to be around INR 4.60-4.80 lakhs (all prices,ex-showroom,Delhi). But for now, you will have to choose between Beat and Figo; so let's find out which one suits you the best.
Beat is powered by a three cylinder 1.0L diesel engine which is the downsized version of Fiat's 1.3L Multijet engine. This engine in Beat is good for 58bhp which can be achieved at 4000rpm with an utmost torque output of 150Nm arriving at 1750rpm. In comparison to Beat, Figo is powered by Ford's bigger and reliable 1.4L TDCI engine which churns out a power output of 68bhp@ 4000rpm. The maximum torque output of 160Nm can be achieved at 2000rpm. Both cars come mated with five speed manual gearbox. Beat claims a fuel efficiency of 25.44km/ltr while Figo offers 20km/ltr.
Standard features which you get in both cars include body colored bumpers, A.C with heater, power steering, remote fuel lid opener and internally adjustable ORVMs that's it; no power windows, no audio system. Apart form this you will only get Tachometer in Beat with integrated LCD screen. Both cars ride on 14 inches wheels and perform best in city traffic. There is less turbo lag in both engines when you drive these cars at low speed in big gears but both lacks the power punch once you are on highways.
However, the Ford Figo feels more refined and powerful than Beat. The car has better highway manners than Beat and gives you confidence while overtaking. There is good amount of space inside as well. It has a 284L boot space with good amount of leg space especially for the rear passengers. The bigger dimensions surely makes Figo a spacious car with strong built quality.
In support of Beat, we would say, it looks far funky and stylish than Figo which relatively has a bland styling. The interiors of Beat are also catchy and looks cool with Blue backlit. The car has sharp lines with aggressive styling makes it look sporty and trendy. The engine is also responsive and fuel efficient which will suit your daily driving style.
Choose wisely as both cars have their own strengths and drawbacks.
