Maruti Suzuki already has a formidable line-up of cars in its fleet and now, this Indian manufacturer seems to be trying to plug the gaps its range. The next addition will be a premium hatchback to rival vehicles like the Hyundai Elite i20 and the new Honda Jazz which has now made its debut in from of the iK-2 Concept at Geneva.
This new hatchback is a global model and has been codenamed the YRA. There have been previous spy images of the car being taken on test runs in Europe and the latest such shots show the car devoid of any camouflage sitting at an airport. Design wise, it looks very modern and chic. The YRA/ iK-2 gets elegant looking alloys, a rising chrome window line, a sharply angled rear windshield and chromed door handles. At the front, there are chrome embellishments and vertical LED daytime running lights.
Powering the YRA/ ik-2 will be the new 1.0 litre Boosterjet turbocharged petrol motor. Turbo-petrols are the future and the ik-2 will have good amount of power while giving more efficiency than a 1.2 petrol. In addition to a regular manual transmission, Maruti Suzuki could definitely offer the YRA with an automatic gearbox as well. This car is built on a new platform that is light as well as rigid for better fuel economy and improved handling. The Hyundai Elite i20 is powered by either a 1.2 litre petrol or a 1.4 litre diesel engine. The Jazz also has both petrol and diesel options with customers being able to choose from 1.2 litre petrol and 1.5 litre diesel engines.
Another interesting fact about this car is that, with the YRA, Suzuki have addressed the issue of inadequate space at the rear in the Swift but despite that, the YRA actually weighs a lot less than the Swift. This makes the car handle better and be more fuel efficient. It is also bigger than its direct rivals (Length- 4,023 mm, Width- 1,920 mm, 2,520 mm wheelbase) which means it would give stiff competition with the new Jazz/ Elite i20 also being spacious and built well. It would also be the most feature packed model hatchback from Maruti yet which means the Elite i20 which is packed to the hilt with features and gadgetry would get its biggest rival yet.
As we have said the interiors also look upmarket, which it needs to be to compete with the Hyundai Elite i20 and the Honda Jazz, and comes equipped with features like a large central display, automatic climate control, push button engine ignition, power foldable rear view mirrors, reverse parking sensors, dual front airbags and more. Maruti would launch it later this year or at the 2016 Auto Expo.
