The WagonR is nowadays instantly recognisable as an iconic car from the fleet of Maruti Suzuki. This hatchback has now been on Indian roads since the year 2000 and in these 14 years, it has sold over 15 lakh units.
Over the years, Maruti Suzuki has tweaked and restyled this car in subtle ways to make sure that its appeal and desirability never fizzed out completely and, undoubtedly, it has done the trick. The Maruti Suzuki WagonR has gone through 3 facelifts and a full model change over its tenure. For the allure of a car to remain even after almost one and a half decades is a pretty big deal.
Pop open the surprisingly short bonnet and one can see the 1.0 litre, 3 cylinder petrol or CNG engine that powers this hatchback. The petrol version delivered 67 bhp while the car powered by the CNG motor had 58 bhp on tap. The petrol driven version of the WagonR could return 20.5 kpl and the CNG version had an efficiency figure of 26.6 km/kg. The company did some clever designing and engineering to maximise the interior space in the WagonR. This was also the very first of the tall boys from Maruti Suzuki, a trend that quickly caught on in the Indian hatchback market.
