You can expect to see the new gen Fabia hatch at your nearest Skoda showroom in the near future as Skoda wants to return to the booming premium hatch space. While an exact launch date has not been revealed the new Fabia will most probably make its India debut at the 2016 Auto Expo. While earlier it was believed that Skoda will not bring it, the huge success of the Hyundai Elite i20 and the fact that other car-makers are also eyeing this space prompted a rethink. The Indian car buyer wants a premium hatchback and the new Fabia fits in perfectly. In terms of looks the new Fabia is a handsome design and in the traditional Skoda fashion it is not showy but sleek and classy at the same time.
The Fabia has sold almost 3.5 million units worldwide since 1999 and in India it also was the starter for the premium hatch segment along with the Volkswagen Polo. However the market at that time was still developing for something like a premium hatch unlike now where the Indian car buyer has matured and willing to pay sedan money for a big hatch.
Design wise the new Fabia borrows from the VisionC concept car with nice clean lines and no over the top styling. The new Fabia is 90 mm wider and 31 mm lower than the previous version which gives it more presence and a more premium look. The interior carries the same philosophy and borrows some design elements from the bigger Octavia. The quality and fit and finish is fantastic also.
Space is good and has got excellent legroom/headroom at the rear. It is more feature rich too with the MirrorLink feature where smartphones to be easily paired to the car. Other features include KESSY (Keyless Entry Start and exit System), front and rear parking sensors, the new electro-mechanical power steering and a large panoramic glass roof. Though it remains to be seen whether some of these features end up in the India spec car due to the fact that Skoda would want to price the car as aggressively as possible.
When it comes to engines worldwide there are four petrol and three diesels and all of them fuel efficient. For India we expect a 1.2 petrol along with the 1.5 diesel just like the new Volkswagen Polo. Overall having had a look at the new Fabia we are impressed and it is indeed good news that Skoda plans to bring it into India. What price, variants etc is something that we will get to know soon.
