December 2014 New Car Sales Analysis

  11 January,2015

Last year, Indian car market has seen significant growth in terms of sales figures if compared to 2013. The month of December proved to be a game changer for many car makers in our market as some auto giants registered high selling numbers which improved their overall year performance while some of them missed the top rankings because of their less aspiring sales figures in the last month. In this article, we try to analyze how each car manufacturer performed last month with the sales figures of their passenger cars in our domestic market.

To start off, it was Maruti Suzuki who dominated the market share with selling highest number of cars in India. Maruti registered a sales growth of 13.3% in the month of December and sold a total 98109 units in domestic market which shows significant contribution from cars like Dzire, Swift, Alto WagonR and utility vans. The newly launched Ciaz is also putting up a good show in its segment helping Maruti to establish in a segment which has always been dominated by Honda which is even today enjoying success with their City. The City and Amaze proved to be the best selling cars for Honda in India. Honda sold 14428 cars in December 14 with City being their highest selling model which stood at 6012 units.

With exceptional response to Elite i20, Hyundai also had a golden period last December. Along with Elite i20, it is the Xcent, Grand i10 and Verna which are giving Hyundai strong momentum in different segments. With 32504 sold units, it was Hyundai after Maruti who sold the most number of cars in India last month. Hyundai grew by 14.7% in domestic market last month while they continue their strong performance in the export market as well. Hyundai was also the largest car exporter in India last month and last year.

Mahindra who happens to be the third largest car selling brand in India saw disappointing results. Their sales declined by 8% last December but their MUV, Bolero continues its success run in our market. It was one of the highest gainers last month. Collectively, Mahindra sold 36328 units in India last December out of which they had sold 9748 units of Bolero. With arrival of new Bolero, things are expected to get even better for Mahindra.

It was a close battle between Tata and Toyota and finally, it was Tata who had the last laugh with selling 12040 units. One can possibly figure out that it is Zest which has put Tata back on track. Tata sold 3056 units of Zest last December which makes Tata a prominent player in the Compact Sedan segment which is currently one of the hottest segment of cars in India. With these figures, Tata recorded a growth of 30% in December 14 if compared to 2013. For Toyota, their December 14 performance consisted of sales of 11740 units which shows a growth of 8%. Their famous MPV, Innova is still dominating its segment and with recent facelift, Toyota expects to maintain its strong foothold in the coming time as well.

Apart from these brands, Volkswagen and Renault are also showing progress in our market. The new Polo and Vento helped Volkswagen took over Renault in our market although by a small margin as Volkswagen sold 4070 units over 3956 units of Renault. The Duster is still proving to be the backbone of Renault in India. The same is the case with Ford with their compact SUV, Ecosport. Ford sold a total of 3761 units last December out of which 3365 units were Ecosport. It is very possible that with the arrival of new Figo and Figo based compact sedan in 2015, Ford may jump above some of its competitors next time.

Nissan and Skoda have also registered significant growth last December with Terrano and Rapid being their most successful models respectively. Apart from these brands, Datsun is also moving slowly progressing with Go and things are likely to get even better for Datsun with arrival of Go+ in our market. Currently, it is the Fiat and Chevrolet who are having a tough time in India and need real boost in sales for survival.

As far as Luxury brands are concerned, it is Audi and Mercedes which have been dominating all other brands in our market. Audi has reported its market growth by 8.5% in India in 2014. Their A3 is one of their best performers in India as it is getting quite positive response from first time luxury car buyers. Mercedes however is also catching up fast in our market as they also managed to sell 10201 units in 2014 marking a sales growth of 13%. After the success of the GLA, Mercedes is all set to launch their first ever compact luxury sedan in our market which will be the first real competitor of A3 in our market and and that along with new C-Class would change things this year for Mercedes.
