Audi has begun the new year with a bang by launching its most powerful as well as the fastest road-car, the Audi R8 LMX, in India. This supercar will sold in a limited edition run of 99 vehicles and be priced at an eye-popping INR 2.97 crores (ex-showroom) each.
The R8 LMX is the first production car with laser high beam lighting in India. A laser spot is integrated into the high beam which significantly increases the range of the headlights. The lights are activated at a speed of 60 kph and above. One laser module per headlight generates a cone of light with twice the range of the all-LED headlight.
Each module comprises four high-power laser diodes. With a diameter of just 300 micrometers, these generate a blue laser beam. A phosphor converter transforms this into white light. Fitted with an intelligent camera based sensor system, the headlamps also detect other road users and actively adjust the light pattern to avoid dazzle.
The combination of LED and laser high beam lighting was used for the first time on the new Audi R18 e tron Quattro at the Le Mans 24 Hours last year, thereby continuing the tradition of testing ideas in motorsports before putting them on the roads. The R8 LMX is powered by a 5.2 litre V10 that belts out a monstrous 562 bhp capable of propelling this car from rest to 100 kph in 3.4 seconds and onto a top speed of 320 kph.
