It is not just India but elsewhere also sedans are losing favour with sales going down. In Indian market the under Rs 10 lakh sedan segment is still doing decent numbers but the above Rs 15 lakh D-segment has completely evaporated. SUVs are taking over and a clear example can be seen with the Creta doing eight thousand plus sales while the Elantra is doing low double digit sales. The D segment has completely been erased in terms of sales as do remember years ago the Honda Civic used to do big numbers.
In the midsize sedan segment too, sales of sales have gone down. The Maruti Ciaz and Honda City are the best sellers with both doing four thousand plus sales but both have gone down in numbers too plus compared to a similarly priced SUV they are doing way less. The Brezza for example is doing over twelve thousand units. SUVs are taking over and in terms of future launches car-makers are also adjusting their product launch strategy accordingly. Look through the list upcoming launches and you would see SUVs dominating and that will continue. Even the compact sedan Dzire and the other cars are way behind similarly priced premium hatchbacks.
