MG Motors has just inaugurated its first manufacturing facility in India with an investment of upwards of Rs 2,000 crore. With an initial capacity of 80,000 units per annum in the first phase, MG Motor India will roll-out its first product from the plant in 2019. The brand MG while unknown in India still has traces with its past here and that the car-maker will leverage.
From its product looking at the current market trends, we expect MG Motors to first launch an SUV in India along with a hatchback. The newest launch from MG Motors worldwide is the XS SUV which if launched would compete with the Duster and Creta amongst others. The XS is the newest MG with a new styling language and new interiors plus a line-up of petrol motors. There is no diesel yet for the UK market but for India we would expect one and in terms of gearbox options there is a 6-speed manual and a 7-speed auto. The XS would be launched later this month in the UK and we bet this is the first product for India though 2019 is far away and the company has not confirmed any products but this being a new product and design direction, its safe to assume this is coming. There is also the GS SUV and MG3 hatch which is part of the global MG Motors range.
