The A8 has been Audi——s answer to the BMW 7 Series and the Mercedes-Benz S-Class for quite a while. This car has been an immensely capable vehicle in all departments and the company has, over time, improved this car vastly. Now, the A8 comes with a powerful engine, ultra luxurious interiors and features that seem straight out of the Star Trek universe. Add in the fact that it can very comfortable but sporty when you put your foot down, and you have a sedan that is brilliant all round.

Powertrain & Performance

The Audi A8L with its 4.2 litre TDI engine is the most powerful diesel car available in India. This engine gets a power boost of 35 bhp and now generates a massive power output of 385 bhp, which makes it superior to every other luxury car available in its class in terms of performance. Apart from this engine, the car has two more V8 engines out of which one is a petrol unit. The 4.0 litre, TFSI petrol engine pumps out a massive power output of 414 bhp which enables this car to do the 0-100 kph dash in just 4.6 seconds. Another efficient 3.0 litre, TDI engine with an increase in torque output is also offered in the A8L. This motor has a power output of 248 bhp. All three engines are connected to an eight-speed Tiptronic transmission, Audi——s legendary Quattro system and the Audi drive select system. The light-weight and stiff chassis of this car is its biggest USP which makes it a lively and agile performer and gives you an enthusiastic feel when you sit behind the wheel.

Build & Styling

Audi has not altered the exterior look of this luxury car too much and has only done minor cosmetic changes to give it a fresh appeal. The front, for instance, now gets raised lines on its bonnet for a more muscular look which, along with its prominent grille, instantly grabs your attention. The new A8L has debuted with the brand new matrix LED headlights, which is a first in the automotive world. These lights not only give you a brighter beam and better vision than regular headlights, but also add to the sporty and aggressive character of this car. The system, in true space age style, also uses cameras to determine whether the drivers of oncoming traffic are being dazzled by the headlights and can shut off individual LEDs in the headlight cluster to prevent that! Moreover, with this new A8L, Audi has taken customization options to a new level by offering this car with a choice of a staggering 111 exterior colours. If that——s not enough for you, then you can also get 23 leather colours, 12 types of wooden inlays, a personalized headrest logo and many more similar options. This 5.14 metre long car has a wheelbase of 3.12 metres that gives you acres of space inside. Further to enhance your comfort level, a Rear Seat Executive package is available along with a Bang & Olufsen surround audio system, Park Assist, Air-ionizer, heads-up display, Audi wireless internet access, a panoramic sunroof and a surround view camera. Adaptive air suspension is a standard feature in this car and five types of programmable ventilation and even a massage system are provided for its front seats. The car gets almost all safety features that you expect at this price such as front and side impact airbags, overhead and knee airbags, stability control, seat belt pre-tensioners and anti-whiplash head restraints which actively tighten and react at the time of a collision. Apart from these, the car also comes equipped with numerous safety features like ABS with EBD and Hydraulic Brake Assist, crash sensors, traction control, Audi lane assist and side assist along with pedestrian detection and a Night Vision Assistant.

The A8, in many ways, epitomised the qualities Audi stood for. This super luxury barge could cosset its occupants in opulent comfort and yet go like the clappers when required. Not to mention that it had every conceivable bit of ultra modern technical wizardry as well, and then some. The Audi A8 has evolved over several years and one can be sure that this latest iteration has taken everything that the A8 was known for one notch higher. It really is a brilliant car.
