Bentley Mulsanne Review

The British motor car maker has come up with an all-new flagship sedan that has not compromised on expense for luxury, technology, and craftsmanship. The Mulsanne is new; it is exclusive. The 2.5 ton car is packed with modern technology and aims at pulling out a decent fuel economy. Mulsanne is not just a symbol of ultra-luxury, but a car that the driver too is going to like. It comes from the company that has won the legendary Le Mans 24-hour race several times over its long history. The Mulsanne sure, cannot afford to fail.

Since the company's merge with Rolls Royce in 1931, the Mulsanne is the first all-Bentley Bentley. The Mulsanne used to be produced earlier between 1980 and 1992. The new version, however, entirely differs from the previous one.

Powertrain & Performance

The Bentley Mulsanne comes as a single variant in India. The luxury car, however, offers a choice of 114 paint colours, 21 carpet colours, 9 wood veneers and 24 interior leather hide, all of which would be tanned using an age-old process to ensure that this future classic is retained.

Though the Mulsanne belongs to the super class segment, the new V8 twin turbo charger engine offers quite a decent fuel economy of 7 to 9 kmpl. The 6.8 litre cylinder-configured 6752 cc engine delivers a lot of power. It is capable of churning out a maximum power of 505 bhp @ 1750 rpm and maximum torque of 1020 Nm @ 1750 rpm proving the Bentley as a high performer on any road. The engine is mated with a 8-speed automatic transmission gearbox with steering wheel mounted paddle shift and rear wheel drive.

Variable displacement plays a very significant role in the fuel economy. Four of the eight cylinders remain idle while cruising. This, in combination with the 8-speed automatic transmission with crisp shifting, reduces the carbon dioxide emission levels. The four-door luxury sedan has the ability to display incredible acceleration. It can trail 100 km in just 5.3 seconds. The top-speed of the luxury sedan is 296 km/h. This means that the Mulsanne is a real quick machine that India is going to like on its roads.

Build & Styling

Bentley Mulsanne has a front-engine, rear-wheel-drive design with driver-adjustable 4-wheel air-spring suspensions, massive 4-wheel ABS disc brakes, anti-skid systems with traction control, roomy cabins generously groomed in wood and leather. It offers the maximum imaginable comfort. The Bentley Mulsanne is a traditional big sedan, assisted by the athletic long-hood and short-deck proportions, flowing upper-body lines, and standard 20 or optional 21-inch wheels.

The Bentley Mulsanne showcases - a unique blend of strength, grace and sporting style. The sedan is solid yet lustrous and classic yet modern. It is fully customisable. The manual brazing of different thicknesses of steel gives the Mulsanne that exclusive, picture-perfect, flush-fit look. Sweeping lines flow into sporting, powerful haunches, hinting at capability in reserve and further accentuating the classic proportions of the car. The long bonnet, reduced front space, stretched rear projection give the car a macho look. The light aluminum-shaded front wings are stiff and smooth.

The Mulsanne's face looks very familiar. The large globular LED headlamps have been positioned very close on either sides of the traditional Bentley grille. The chrome-surrounded sides with two small outboard lamp clusters, giving the Mulsanne the sporting and distinctive Bentley look, echo the preferential configuration of Bentleys of the 1930s and 1950s.

The Mulsanne's interior is a fusion of extremes. Classic tones merge beautifully with the bold luxury accent colours. Superior-quality wood veneers, leather hides and solid stainless steel brightware heighten the car's luxury. The driver's fingers are just a touch away from the controls. The deep pile carpets offer matchless comfort. The bull's-eye air vents, glass-like switchgear, advanced electronic systems, 4-zone air conditioning and state-of-the-art soundproofing, all resonate class and luxury. A solid ring of wood encloses the entire cabin. There is more-than-enough headroom, legroom, shoulder room and hip room. The seats too are customisable; they can be rotated in any direction for space adjustment when there's extra cargo.

The luxury sedan is keen on safety too. The Mulsanne is equipped with the latest technologies like Electronic Brake Distribution (EBD), 4-wheel ABS and anti-slip regulation (ASR) ensuring a safe ride in any condition. Airbags for the driver and passenger in the front and rear, rear door child safety locks, child seat anchors, emergency interior trunk release, remote anti-theft alarm system, remote keyless entry and crystal-clear high-intensity lamps only add to passenger safety making the Mulsanne - a safe car in every aspect.

The sound approved multimedia Am/Fm audio/video music system supported by a 6 CD/DVD changer stereo offers ultimate amusement. The entertainment system is enhanced with the video monitor and 20 speakers. The 60 GB hard disc is where you can store all your musical possessions.
