BMW X6 Review

By   |  June 1, 2015

The BMW X6 is what the German luxury car manufacturer calls a Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV). The car couples the size and capacity of an SUV with sporty appearance and style of a coupe. Available as the xDrive40d variant, the X6 is a splendid on-road performer with positive derivatives from both the SUV and the Coupe worlds. The BMW X6 has 5 options for exterior paint colours, namely: Alpine White, Carbon Black, Flamenco Red Brilliant Effect, Space Grey and Mineral White.

Powertrain & Performance

The BMW X6 Sports Activity Coupe comes with a whopper of an engine. The 3.0 litre, 6 cylinder diesel engine is an absolute gem. To make it better, BMW have attached two big turbos to it which boosts the final power output to 308 bhp. The ability to vary the timings of valve opening helps the engine to be efficient as well. The torque generated from this unit is as high as 600 Nm. Hitting the 100 kph mark from a standstill takes just 5.8 seconds; shockingly fast for such a largely proportioned and heavy vehicle. The transmission unit is an 8 speed automatic gearbox and the driver can use the paddles located behind the steering wheel to shift up or down through the gears. Power is channeled to all 4 wheels of the car and, together with its responsive steering, makes driving this SUV an absolute joy.

Build & Styling

Possessing a high stature, large wheels and bulging wheel arches, the large size car manages to be stylish and massively imposing at the same time. The face looks bold with its trademark kidney grille and striking LED headlight clusters. The tail lamp unit melds with the character lines that extend over the sides of the body. An aluminium running board has been made available to provide for easy passenger ingress and egress. The top of the vehicle has a sunroof which increases the feeling of roominess inside the vehicle. The passenger cabin of the BMW X6 cossets its occupants with its rich leather upholstery and the use of exotic materials. Wooden trim decorates the dashboard, door, center console and other areas of the cabin.

The cameras built over these vehicles give a wide view of the rear which makes parking an easier task, a necessary feature since it is almost impossible to see out of the rear windshield due to its sharply raked angle. Automatic climate control with different cooling zones and the large screen of the latest generation iDrive system in the dashboard, rear seat entertainment, a high end surround sound system from Bang & Olufsen, voice recognition, comfort access and a 10.2 inch display in the instrument binnacle are other gadgets available in this vehicle. Safety in this automobile is also very high, with equipment ranging from an intelligent all wheel drive system which can sense the level of traction under the wheels and distribute necessary torque, multiple airbags, ABS with EBD and Brake Assist, hill descent control and hill hold, electronic stability control, traction control, anti slip regulation, an engine immobiliser, and front and rear parking sensors.

The BMW X6 was one of the most radical looking cars when it came out and even now, several years later, it is difficult not to turn around and gape at it every time one passes by on the road! This vehicle has it all: amazing performance, looks to kill, solid build quality, the latest toys and more. The fact of the matter is this: there is no grey area whatsoever with a car like this. You will either love the X6 or hate it.
