When it comes to buying a commercial pick-up truck in India, options are very limited. They are mainly restricted to Mahindra and Tata products only, but now, Isuzu, the renowned Japanese auto giant is also offering their entry level pick-up truck in India, the D-Max Single Cab. Which qualities differentiate this truck from our Indian options? Find out here.

Powertrain and Performance

The biggest advantage of this pick-up truck is its refined and powerful diesel engine. It shares its 2.5 litre, 4-cylinder CRDI engine with the upper variants, the Space Cab Flat deck and Arched deck. This engine is the downsized version of the 3.0 litre diesel engine doing duty in Isuzu's flagship model, the MU-7. Given the fact that people will use the D-Max Single Cab to transport heavy goods from place to place, it has a very powerful engine. The rear payload capacity is 1.2 tonnes which will, most of the time, be exceeded as usually seen in other commercial vehicles but that won't really affect the performance of this truck thanks to its responsive engine. This 2.5 litre engine has a maximum power output of 134 bhp which is achieved at 3600rpm. With a torque output of 294 Nm available straight away from 1800rpm, the D-Max makes for a perfect utility vehicle which can easily take heavy loads without breaking a sweat.

The suspension is also adequately tuned to meet its regular usage making the D-Max a much less bouncy vehicle than its rivals. Moreover, it has a claimed top speed of 175 kph which it achieves without too much trouble. Tilt-adjustable power steering is also a first in this category and makes it a driver-favouring truck. It is also easy to park this truck and thanks to its not so huge turning radius, one can use it more frequently than its rivals. The engine comes mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox which offers nice gear shifts and come with well matched gear ratios. The short two gear ratios at the beginning make it easy for you to get moving from standstill without any hassles and give you a decent amount of momentum while crawling in traffic or driving uphill.

Build and Styling

The D-Max single cab is visually the stripped down version of range topping, Space Cab Arched Deck variant, even though there is no significant change in the basic style and design of the vehicle. The vertically placed multi-reflector headlights are also available in this variant and so is the sporty bonnet scoop giving it a familiar yet funy look from front. The front grille however lacks the premium chrome treatment and features an all black colour theme. Moreover, the front bumper, outside rear view mirrors and door handles also lack the body color treatment and comes in basic black colour. The single cab variant retains the visual characteristics as its siblings such as raised suspension, bold wheel arches and high ground clearance, but it gets a different and less appealing rear deck which looks purely functional and makes it look like any other truck when seen from the side and the back. It also gets slightly different tail lights making this truck look strikingly different from the upper variant.

There are noticeable changes inside the cabin as well which can be seen in the form of different four-spoke steering wheel and longer gear knob taking the premium touch away from it although the cabin and material quality is significantly better than its rivals. There is a good amount of leg and shoulder room for the front passengers with enough under and back thigh support thanks to its full size seats with adjustable front headrests. There is no option of power windows in this variant and the door pad treatment is also different than its premium sibling.

With an entry level price of INR 6.13 lakhs (ex-showroom, Delhi), the D-Max single cab variant becomes a very affordable pick-up truck option which surely seems by far the most promising vehicle that can serve you without compromising on quality and technology. Yes, the lack of a strong service network and spare parts could be a matter of concern for few but apart from that, it is probably the best pick-up truck for commercial usage in our market.
