Isuzu MU-7 Review

By   |  October 29, 2013

Isuzu is a name that is famous for building SUV’s and trucks but in India it has been known for its diesel engines. Isuzu is one of the oldest Japanese auto companies and it prides on its robust engines and SUV’s. Now Isuzu has come to India with its famous SUV line-up and has unleashed its MU-7 SUV. Sold alongside its pickup sibling the MU-7 is a tough SUV that will give the SUV lovers in India yet another choice. The MU-7 impresses with its big presence, 161 bhp 3.0-litre diesel engine and spacious interiors, providing a more exclusive option to the Toyota Fortuner and the others. Speaking of competition the Isuzu MU-7 competes with the Mitsubishi Pajero Sport, Ssangyong Rexton and of course the Toyota Fortuner mentioned earlier. While the Fortuner is a popular option we feel the Isuzu MU-7 with its distinct styling will appeal to you and while the Pajero Sport is renowned for its off-road prowess the Isuzu is also a tough no-nonsense off-roader. The Isuzu MU-7 is available only in 4x2 guise for now and comes in a fully loaded variant.

Powertrain & Performance

Underneath the massive hood the Isuzu MU-7 is powered by a 2999cc turbo-diesel engine making 161 bhp at 3600 rpm and a strong 360Nm of torque. The Isuzu MU-7 is a big beast weighing in at 1900 kg but despite the size and weight this SUV has enough poke to make the driver smile. Isuzu has a reputation for making great diesel engines and it immediately shows when you first drive the MU-7. Performance is good with a top speed of 175 kmph and a 0-100 km/h time of 10.7 seconds. The MU-7 is available with a 5-speed manual transmission and the gearbox is decently slick to use. In-fact do not let its big size fool you as this SUV shifts very well indeed. Thanks to giant wave of torque coming in gearshifts are few and it is easy to drive in traffic- not something that you can say of its competition. The Isuzu MU-7 has a double wishbone front suspension and leaf springs at the rear which provides a good ride and when it comes to handling, it may not be a sporty crossover, it handles well and body-roll is not excessive. The steering in this SUV is a rack and pinion type with hydraulic power assisted which makes it direct and gives decent feedback.  When it comes to the engine the Isuzu MU-7 impresses with its tough character and strong engine.

Build & Styling

We like our SUV’s to be big and they do not come much bigger than the MU-7. The Isuzu MU-7 has huge presence and dwarfs some of its rivals. It has a length of 4955mm, breadth of 1800mm and height of 1805mm. The sheer size of the vehicle hits you when you take a walk around it and believe me you will get quite an exercise while doing so! The MU-7 hides its bulk very well with some clever and good looking design details. The front is just brutal with its sharp headlamps and upright stance. The rear in comparison is quite soft. There has been chrome used which makes it more premium looking.

Step inside and the same no-nonsense philosophy is applies. The interior is simple and functional. The design is again targeted for ease of use rather than style. When it comes to features you get a good amount of equipment like a touch screen system which also acts as a reversing camera when you are reversing this behemoth. Quality is good with plush leather seats and the various controls feel good to use. The big plus regarding the Isuzu MU-7 is the sheer amount of space inside. This is a seven-seater and there are acres of space available at front and at the back. When it comes to safety you get ABS with EBD and driver/passenger airbags.

The Isuzu MU-7 is an SUV having old school ethos and that many will like. It has massive presence, huge space inside and has a potent engine. It stands out from the crowd and has character in bucket loads. With more dealers in the pipeline the appeal of the Isuzu MU-7 will only increase and overall which ever way you look at it, this is a desirable SUV.
