By   |  December 10, 2014

It goes without saying that the Alto is a massively popular car in India as it has enjoyed immense success in our market. Be it any generation of the Alto, it has always set the sales charts on fire. So when the time came for a new generation model, Maruti decided to up the ante and the result is the new K10 which is better in almost all departments over the previous version and of course, there is the new AMT gearbox option as well.

Powertrain and Performance

The new gen Alto K10 is powered by one of Maruti's most reliable, 1.0 litre, 3 cylinder K-series engine which was also doing duty in the previous model. This engine is capable of churning out a maximum power output of 67 bhp. The torque output of this engine is 90Nm which can be achieved at 3500rpm. This engine is served with a 5-speed manual gearbox as standard and an AMT gearbox as an option. The new Alto K10 shares its platform with the new Alto 800 and hence enjoys best in class power-to-weight ratio.

The engine can be rev hard as it feels quite refined and eager to go thanks to its peppy low and mid range. With a slight press of throttle, you can notice the responsiveness of this engine. The AMT gearbox is a boon in the city and offers decent response when going fast, do not forget it is also quite efficient. Ride quality is also better than before. The softer suspension set up gives you comfortable rides in the city as it tackles well with broken roads and uneven surfaces. Handling is also quite light which makes it a sprinter on our crowded roads. It feels extremely light and is a very easy car to be handle in city. traffic.

Build and Styling

It is not only the performance which has improved; the car comes with a new identity which makes it look much better than before. As we told you before, it shares its platform with the new Alto 800 so it brings along the styling cues as well but in a better shape. The face now features a prominent chrome front grille which complements its stretched headlights which helps it look fresh and distinctive. The air-dam in its bumper is much wider than before and adds nice touch to the personality of the car. The bigger fog lights housing completes the front look of the car. In the top version, you will see it along with body colored door handles and ORVMs. Rest of the side profile looks like the stretched version of Alto 800 until you reach its back which features new clear lens tail lamps which are big in size and goes well with the rear boot styling. The sharp lines on rear bumper also gels well with the overall styling of the car.

The moment you step inside the car, it is extremely hard to compare this car with its previous model. The bright and funky looking dual tone interiors adds to the character of this car. The sliver accents and black colored central console are the most striking things inside. The top variant, VXi(O) also looks like a better deal than before in terms of features and equipments. It comes with a 2-Din music system with front two speakers, it's a radio, CD/MP3 player with USB and Aux compatibility. A.C with heater, power steering, front power windows, tachometer, digital clock, seat belt warning, accessory socket, rear parcel tray and internally adjustable ORVMs on both sides are some of the other features available in the new K10. The VXi(O) is the safest variant of Alto K10 as it comes with front fog lights, keyless entry and most importantly an optional driver side airbag which plays a vital role if you meet an accident. The lower variants misses out on airbag and keyless entry and only the VXi variant features central locking.

The new Maruti Suzuki Alto K10 offers excellent value for money and we like the AMT version for its combination of efficiency and the ease of use. Overall Maruti has again come out with a winner and it is so much better than the previous model. Another success for Maruti.
