Mercedes-Benz CLA 45 AMG Review

Mercedes-Benz has launched the CLA45 AMG at an attractive price which makes the CLA 45 the entry ticket to the AMG club. The CLA45 AMG is different compared to other AMGs in the sense that it does not have a big V8 but a 2.0 turbo engine. But it has proper AMG performance and also we think looks the best in its range. The CLA 45 AMG does not have any competition at this price and that means the CLA 45 will hold on to this niche segment.

Powertrain & Performance

As we have said we expect AMG's to have V8's but the smaller CLA 45 has the most powerful four-cylinder series-production engine in the world. Power here is 355 bhp and torque is 450 Nm which is big numbers considering the engine size. Performance as you would expect then is just brilliant with the CLA 45 doing 0 to 100 km/h in 4.6 seconds and having a top speed of 250 km/h (electronically limited). That is properly quick.

The CLA 45 AMG———s AMG SPEEDSHIFT DCT 7-speed sports transmission transfers the engine power to all the four wheels. This dual clutch transmission has seven gears, three modes, a double-declutching function and RACE START function which can be activated by pulling on both shift paddles simultaneously. Of all modes Sport is the best though manual gives you complete control.

Build & Styling

Along with the performance the main reason to buy this sports sedan is its stunning looks. Make no mistake this is the best looking car available for the amount of money. Based on the A-Class the CLA with the added boot looks sensational with the AMG bits. At the front there is the "twin blade" radiator grille encompassing the central Three Pointed Star then you have a front splitter whch is located at the bottom end of the central cooling air opening.

Like the twin-blade radiator grille, it is painted matt titanium grey. Move to the side and you cannot help with stare at those 5-spoke 18 inch light-alloy wheels. At the rear the gorgeous tail-lamps, the sporty rear bumper and those exhausts just round up the looks. Inside you get an AMG start-up screen on the centrally positioned TFT colour display, carbon fibre design instruments, AMG Performance Seats, AMG Performance Steering Wheel and Panoramic sliding sunroof. Space is not that much at the rear though.


The CLA 45 taps into a niche that no one else has explored. It is affordable (relatively speaking), is fast, looks stunning inside out and is an easy car to drive every day. We loved the performance and when driven hard it does sound some-what like its V8 engined big brothers. All in all if you want a sporty sedan that looks unlike anything else we recommend you spend Rs 68.5 lakhs for this one.
